It is common for individuals with developmental disabilities, as well as many children without these diagnoses, to engage in inappropriate behaviors. These behaviors can range from crying and tantrums to attempts to harm themselves, others or objects in the environment. Other common behaviors of concern include engaging in repeated “stereotypic” movements, leaving the home or area, making inappropriate statements, and mouthing/eating non-edible items. These behaviors can be not only frustrating for parents, teachers, and caregivers, but can also interfere with the individual’s ability to participate fully in school, home, community, social and even vocational settings. Research shows that function based assessments and interventions can often be successful in reducing even the most challenging behaviors. At Applied Behavior Services, our experienced consultants have years of training and experience in conducting a variety of functional behavior assessments and identifying the environmental variables that are contributing to the behaviors of concern. By pinpointing these variables, our consultants can develop a specific and individualized behavior plan to reduce these behaviors and teach new behaviors that will help the individual meet their needs in a more appropriate manner. The consultants at Applied Behavior Services work with the parents, teachers and other caregivers to ensure that the behavior plan not only contains research based best practice interventions but is tailored to fit the unique needs of the individual and his or her situation. Detailed individualized training is provided to each caregiver to ensure that the plan can be easily and consistently implemented in all environments. Our consultants come to you to provide training in the home, school and community settings to ensure that the plan will effectively meet the individual’s needs in their natural environment. Training and support is provided by our consultants to teach each caregiver the skills he or she needs to consistently implement the plan, train others to implement the plan and successfully fade the plan while maintaining appropriate behavior.
